    Contrast medium injector

Briefing

Corpusdesign was commissioned by ulrich medical in 2007 to further develop the design concept of the “CT_Motion” contrast medium injector, which had already been created, in detail until it was ready for series production. The main focus of the design development was on usability as well as on compliance with the usual standards for the usability development process for medical products. The medication and contrast agent bottles in the upper area of the injector must be easy to see and easy to change for people of different heights, for example. The good visibility and operability naturally also applies to the integrated display with the associated control elements. Ensuring stability against tipping was a particularly big challenge. On the one hand, the user wants the smallest possible footprint and on the other hand, the unit must not tip over even in critical situations. Last but not least, the appliance must of course also be disinfected quickly and easily by wiping. Of course, the design proposals must be in line with the estimated production costs, as this is the only way to ensure that the product will not only be innovative but also competitive in the market.

The shape improves the function

In order to be able to further develop the product design until it was ready for series production, many requirements had to be met, as required by the regulations of medical technology. Here, guidelines had to be observed, as we know them from the VDE standards for the usability-oriented development process of DIN EN 60601 or DIN EN 62366. Validation, evaluation and verification are indispensable steps in the design process to ensure fitness for purpose. The “form follows the function” or better still the “form improves the function” was the highest premise in the product design. Since the technical requirements do not always correspond to the formal ideas, the biggest challenge was always to find the best possible compromise. The number of castors on the chassis was therefore reduced from the original five to four in order to reduce the risk of tripping, to be able to work as close as possible to the unit with sufficient free foot space and ultimately to reduce costs.

Realization

At the same time, the chassis was fitted with a grey rubber bump stop. This offers protection, visually breaks up the chassis in colour and makes it appear smaller in form.
The Americans say “God is in the Detail” instead of “The Devil is in the Detail”. Every detail offers excellent potential for improvement and is worth a close look. Ulrich Medical recognized this potential and gave Corpusdesign the necessary creative freedom. The result speaks for itself.
